Mendenhall Glacier - Day 2

That is the Mendenhall Glacier in the background. I love how it comes right up to the lake. Around 1998 the glacier receded 30-60 feet a year, but with all of the global warming this year alone it has receded 300-400 feet and is still receeding. Sad huh? But it is still huge. In 1935 the glacier cam past the point where this picture was taken.

Can you see the tiny ice cube just below Jamie's hand? She saw it out in the water and decided to risk life and limb to retreive it. And the day was cold to begin with! Just imagine getting into the water.

It wasn't that small and it was really heavy!

It's a really cute seat though

Even on vacation she is still a slave driver!

This isn't real. It was just inside the visitors center and I was afraid that I wouldn't get to see the real ice caves. So I took this just in case.

The Del Sol girls (that is what they call the girls who work at Del Sol) helped build this park. It is so BIG! Just look at the size my mom is to the Ice Princess Castle. And yes, that is the name of that castle. I wish I could have got the entire park in the picture but it was way too big. So all you can see is about a 1/4 of it. Why didn't I have a cool park like this growing up?

This is the historic Red Dog Saloon. It's been there forever. Maybe since the beginnig of time. Don't worry, we didn't drink that much.

Well, maybe it was a little more than we thought.

Yummy sign. Anyway the jewlery store on the left side of the picture is directly under our apartment. It was fun to be staying downtown. Lot's of tourists all the time. We showed up at the end of the season so there was never more than 4 ships in at a time. But most of the time there was only 3 ships. Jamie said that it was almost always 4-5 ships a day throughout the summer. When the cruises stop comming at the end of September, downtown Juneau will basically shut down becuase it is only open for the tourists.
